Nikolay Pavlovich Zadornov (1909–1992) was a famous writer and author of novels about the exploration of Siberia and the Far East by Russian pioneers, whose names will forever remain in the people’s memory. A special place in N. P. Zadornov’s work is occupied by a series of works about the outstanding navigator G. I. Nevelskoy, the leader of the Amur expedition, which contributed to the strengthening of Russia in the Pacific Ocean. This edition includes the most famous novel from this series, which shows a broad panorama of life in Russia in the 1840s–1850s, and tells about the intense struggle that Nevelskoy had to wage to implement his ideas, imbued with concern for the prosperity of the Motherland.

The text of the novel is accompanied by rare illustrations by the remarkable Soviet graphic artist I. D. Arkhipov (1926–1993).
