French poet, novelist, journalist, critic and traveler Theophile Gautier entered the history of literature as "the last romantic" and the first representative of the new, "Parnassian" school in French poetry. His pen belong to dozens of short stories and several novels, among which the most famous is written in the late period of creativity "Captain Fracasse" (1861-1863). This historical-adventure novel takes the reader to France at the time of Louis XIII, on the roads of which, along with a troupe of traveling comedians wanders - under a stage name, which gave the name of the book - impoverished nobleman Baron de Sigonyak, in love with a young actress Isabella. Rivalry in love, duels and chases, robber ambushes, sudden disappearances, a happy rescue, the desired wedding and the discovery of an ancient treasure - all these signs of the novel "cloak and sword" coupled with the glorification of free acting life ensured the book's long popularity in Gautier's homeland and beyond, as evidenced by the many reprints, theatrical productions, and later screenings. In this edition, the novel is accompanied by Gustave Doré's magnificent classical illustrations.
