Gunboats of the "Gilyak" type. From China and Port Arthur to the First World War

The "Gilyak" (as Russian settlers called the indigenous inhabitants of Sakhalin) was the first gunboat in the Russian Navy capable not only of operating on rivers, but also of making ocean passages. This gunboat became famous for its heroic participation in the storming of the Chinese forts Taku in 1900 at the mouth of the river Haihe during the suppression of the rebellion of the Yekhetuan. In 1904 the ship participated as a floating battery in the defense of Port Arthur, repulsing many attacks of Japanese destroyers and brigands. The series of gunboats of the "Gilyak" type, created after the war, had a shallow draft and rapid-fire artillery and were specially designed for service in the lower reaches of the Amur River (from the mouth to Khabarovsk) and protection of the Far Eastern coast of the Russian Empire. They received their names in memory of the gunboats that perished in the Russo-Japanese War - "Gilyak", "Sivuch", "Beaver" and "Koreets". However, all of them eventually joined the Baltic Fleet. In the First World War "Gilyak" participated in combat operations, and the feat of the crew of the "Sivuch" for the unequal battle with the German battleships "Posen" and "Nassau" nicknamed "Baltic Varyag", like the feat of the legendary cruiser entered the history of the Russian Navy as one of the brightest examples of courage and selfless fulfillment of military duty. The new book by the famous historian of the fleet for the first time in all details restores the history of creation, service and combat use of gunboats "Gilyak" and the series of gunboats of the same name. The edition is illustrated with many exclusive drawings and photographs.
