In 1905, the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his series of novels. His excellent knowledge of history and brilliant talent allowed him to become a corresponding member and honorary academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in the department of Russian language and literature. "Kamo Grydeshi" - the most famous novel Sienkiewicz; pictures of life in Rome in the middle of I century AD and the persecution of Christians at that time described in it with amazing authenticity. To achieve this effect, Sienkiewicz reworked many ancient documents. All the linguistic nuances of the novel are beautifully rendered in the translation, which was done by Vukol Mikhailovich Lavrov (1852-1912). He was born into a merchant family and received his home education in Elets. He was taught Polish language and mathematics by Boleslav Ivanovich Zelensky, an exiled student of Moscow University. After the death of his father, Lavrov devoted his life to literary and publishing activities. He visited Warsaw, where he met Sienkiewicz. After this meeting, Lavrov became seriously interested in translations of Polish literature. His translation of "Kamo Gredesha" is considered exemplary, it was first printed in the early XX century in several issues of the journal "Russian Thought". The commentaries to the text of the novel in this edition are written by Sergei Ivanovich Sobolevsky (1864-1963), a professor at Moscow University and corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences. He graduated from Moscow University with a gold medal and soon became one of the leading specialists in the field of ancient history and literature. Sobolevsky headed the ancient department at the Institute of World Literature of the USSR Academy of Sciences and was professor of ancient languages at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute. He commented on many ancient works, in particular the famous "Notes on the War with the Gauls" by Julius Caesar. The edition is decorated with world-famous illustrations by the Polish artist Jan Styka (1858-1925). He received a solid education at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and for some time after graduating from the Academy he trained in Italy, where he familiarized himself with the best works of Italian artists. He was fascinated by biblical and ancient subjects. Well known are his large-scale canvases "Golgotha" and "The Torment of Christians in Nero's Circus". Work on the illustrations for the novel Sienkiewicz left a noticeable trace in the life of the artist. On the island of Capri, where he spent the last years of his life, he managed to create a museum with paintings and photographs of his illustrations of Sienkiewicz's novel.
