Many centuries ago, in a land where tall pine and fir trees rustle and sea waves talk to the lake surface, wonderful folk tales were formed. They were called runes and passed from mouth to mouth for generations, only to be compiled into a single poem by Finnish linguist Elias Lönnroth in the 19th century. Kalevala is the name of the sunny and fertile country where the glorious heroes live: here the old, wise Väinemäinen sings his prophetic songs and everything happens according to his word; here the fearless hunter, cheerful Lemminkainen goes to matchmaking in the gloomy country of Pohjöla; and here the skillful blacksmith Ilmarinen forges the wonderful mill Sampo, which can give its owner flour, salt and gold. Heroes go on wanderings and perform feats, defeat evil and restore justice - so that there would be wealth and happiness in their native land, so that the good people would not know evil and misfortune. The legendary Karelian-Finnish epic was retold for children by Alexandra Lyubarskaya and embodied in illustrations by Nikolai Kochergin.
