The children's (prose) version of the Karelian-Finnish epic "Kalevala" appeared in our country in 1953. It was in that year that a book containing a retelling by Alexandra Lyubarskaya, illustrated by Nikolai Kochergin, was published. For both the author of the text and the author of the illustrations "Kalevala" became a theme to which they addressed for several decades, revising and supplementing the initial versions. The writer kept polishing phrases, and the artist made more and more new sheets, striving for the ultimate imagery of the drawing. As a result, N. Kochergin created two independent versions of the book: black-and-white and color. The first one is considered to be stronger, more appropriate to the northern theme of the epic, more poignant. However, the black-and-white version is in fact also colored. It seems that it turned out to be black and white because the then polygraphers simply could not reproduce the complex shades invented by the artist. NIGMA Publishing House returns to the readers the black-and-white "Kalevala" in the form in which it was created by Nikolai Kochergin. At the same time we considered it possible to include in the book full-page color illustrations made by the master for the later version of "Kalevala". The Karelian-Finnish epic retold for children by Alexandra Lyubarskaya. About one hundred monochrome and color illustrations by Nikolai Kochergin.
