Tom Hazard is a seemingly unremarkable man of forty. But he has a secret: he was born in 1581. Tom is not immortal, but he ages approximately fifteen times slower than other people. Along with other ageless beings, he is a member of the secret Albatross Society. The Albatrosses' job is to protect their secret, as ordinary people are not prepared to accept them calmly. They have been persecuted throughout history: in the Middle Ages, they were burned, and in modern times, they are simply locked in insane asylums. The Albatrosses' main rule is never to fall in love. Love makes them unhappy and weak, as they are doomed to watch their loved ones, and even their children, grow old and die. Every eight years, Tom changes his habitat and identity. Every eight years, he renounces his past. This time, he settled in London and got a job as a history teacher at a school. It was in this city that he once met his one true love. And ironically, it seems he will break the Albatross' cardinal rule again.
