This educational fairy tale by the remarkable Russian animal writer Vitaly Bianki tells the story of a curious ant who climbed a tree and flew away on a birch leaf, carried by a gust of wind, far from his nest. He needs to get home before sunset, otherwise he won't be able to get inside.

Everything would be fine, but his injured leg complicates his journey. The ant is "driven" home by a succession of accomplices: a land surveyor, a harvestman spider, a ground beetle, a flea beetle, a grasshopper, a water strider, a cockchafer, and a leaf roller caterpillar. Eventually, the ant reaches his nest and manages to escape through the last open hole.

The book is adorned with illustrations by Lev Tokmakov. Several editions of the tale were published with the artist's drawings. Unfortunately, no complete sets of the original illustrations survive. We have prepared a new edition of the book, carefully restoring and combining the surviving originals from previous editions.
