This book by German Admiral Reinhard Scheer (1863-1928) recounts the operations of the German Navy in World War I. Scheer's work was the first to be published. From the beginning of the war Scheer commanded a formation of line ships, and in January 1916 he was appointed commander of the High Seas Fleet. In May of that year, he commanded German forces at the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of World War I between the German and British fleets. Scheer would later become a proponent of the strategy of unrestricted submarine warfare. Written shortly after the end of the war, the book reflects the German perspective on the course and outcome of the naval confrontation between Britain and Germany.
