Georg Friedrich Parrott (1767-1852), professor of physics at the University of Dorpat, has gone down in history not only as a scientist, but also as an interlocutor and friend of Emperor Alexander I. Their correspondence is a rare example of trusting friendship between an autocratic ruler and his subject, sincerely interested in progressive changes in the country. In return for his boundless loyalty, Alexander I confided important state secrets to Parrot - for example, he shared his intention to grant Russia a constitution or discussed the fate of Speransky, accused of treason. The book by historian A. Andreev for the first time introduces into scientific circulation the surviving texts of more than 200 letters translated into Russian, with detailed comments and annotated indexes. The publication of the letters is preceded by a large historical study devoted to the relations between Alexander I and Parrott, as well as the fate of their correspondence, which is full of mysteries and allows us to take a new look at the history of Russia in the early 19th century. Andrei Andreev - Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Russian History of the XIX century - early XX century, Faculty of History, Lomonosov Moscow State University.
