The novel "To the "last sea" - the final book of the famous trilogy of Vasily Grigorievich Yan (1875-1954) about the Mongol conquests of the first half of the XIII century. It is devoted to the last campaign of Batyi's army to the west through the lands of Western and Southern Russia (1239-1242). Having subdued the North Caucasus and Crimea, Kiev and Chernigov, Poland and Hungary, and having reached the shores of the Adriatic Sea, the Mongols still could not retain power in these territories. As a result, the campaign to the "last sea" turned out for the Mongols and their leaders to be a pursuit of a phantom dream, which eventually slipped out of their hands. A bloody dream for which tens of thousands of people in the conquered lands paid with their lives.
Having described in colors the horrors of the Mongol conquest, Vasily Jan, himself an eyewitness of two world wars and the Russian Civil War, at the end of the novel makes the reader realize that no empire is not worth the blood of exterminated and subjugated peoples, that you can not build your own happy present on the deaths and grief of others.
