"This Madness", subtitled "The first true love novel ever written", Theodore Dreiser considered his most significant and personal work.
As the author himself admitted, in his life, romantic relationships have always played a paramount role. They toned him, stirred his thoughts and strengthened his spirit. No wonder that Dreiser's love life was extremely intense: he separated from his wife, regularly changed mistresses and even cheated on his constant companion. It was the memories of a few of the most vivid relationships in Dreiser's life that formed the basis of the novel. "This Madness" was published in parts on the pages of the magazine "Hearst International" c February to July 1929. The writer planned to include a few more essays, but never returned to the subject.
