English physician and writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is known worldwide as an unrivaled master of the detective genre, author of numerous works featuring the brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes and his faithful friend Dr. Watson. Classic translations of these stories and novels, produced long ago and by numerous translators, suffer from well-known shortcomings: discrepancies, omissions, and outright errors.
We present the first volume (the novel "A Study in Scarlet," the collection "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes") of a four-volume set featuring a complete translation of the entire Holmes canon. This is a truly unique edition: all works in the series have been newly translated by Lyudmila Brilova and Sergey Sukharev—masters whose translations of Kazuo Ishiguro and Ray Bradbury, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Charles Palliser, Thomas de Quincey, Herman Melville, and others have long since become classics. Each volume also features a large number of classic illustrations and additional materials: prefaces to early publications, Conan Doyle's memoirs on various works, and several interviews with the writer.
This book includes a complete set of illustrations by Sidney Paget that accompanied the original publication of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in The Strand magazine, as well as illustrations by Josef Friedrich for one of the first Czech editions of A Study in Scarlet.
