"The Epic of Gilgamesh" is the oldest work of fiction known to mankind. When in the XVIII century BC Sumerian poets began to fill the first clay tablets, telling about the exploits of the ruler of the city of Uruk, there was not yet a single European state, and in the ancient East barely glimmered the dawn of civilization. The more interesting to modern readers are the main characters of the epic - the demigod Gilgamesh and his rival friend Enkidu. Their feelings and deeds are close and understandable to us. Accession to high culture, grief after the death of a friend, the desire for immortality - these main themes of the ancient epic can be called eternal. Since the "Epic of Gilgamesh" was discovered, and it happened only in the XIX century, scientists and poets do not stop referring to the ancient text, trying to penetrate into its mysteries and to convey the beauty of the verse form. This edition is unique in its own way: the translation presented in it reflects the findings and discoveries made in connection with the study of the Epic of Gilgamesh in recent times.
