The study by G.S. Lebedev is devoted to a little-studied topic in Russian historical literature — the final stage of the transition of the peoples of Europe from a primitive communal system to a class society. It examines the main stages of the Vikings' activities in Western Europe and shows the inconsistency of the Normanist constructions of Western historiography.

For the first time, using specific data from history, archeology, numismatics and language, the significance of Ancient Rus' for the internal development of the Scandinavian countries is revealed, the leading place of the Old Russian state in the international relations of the peoples of the Baltic region, the role of the Varangians in the history of Kievan Rus' in the 9th-11th centuries is shown.

Rich illustrative material, clarity and consistency of presentation of thoughts, as well as a fascinating narrative, will attract the attention of not only specialists — historians, archaeologists, ethnographers, but also a wide range of readers for whom the connection between the "Viking problem" and the "Varangian question" — the key issue of Russian history — is obvious.
