The name of the creative duo of Eugene Voiskunsky and Isaai Lukodianov, although it is not on the leading place, as, say, the names of Ivan Efremov, the Strugatsky brothers or Kir Bulychev, but nevertheless it is one of the brightest pages in the history of Russian science fiction. The mere fact that their first joint experience - the novel "The Mekong Crew", published in the early sixties - was singled out from the stream of manuscripts by Arkady Strugatsky, who at that time was on the editorial staff of Detgiz, speaks eloquently for itself. The book is written in a lively, human language rare for the then fiction, full of humor and good irony, masterfully decorated with details of the unique life of the southern Caspian city, the people in it are not mannequins, not schemes, not walking mouthpieces-expressors of some project or idea, but just people, just like us, not geniuses, but not fools too. "Ur, Son of Sham," written more than a decade later, is formally adjacent to "The Mekong Crew." In the novel, the characters of "Mekong" meet the son of a Babylonian returned to Earth, abducted from Earth by space aliens several millennia ago. Fiction? Yes, of course it is. But it's also a novel about love. A love that transcends space and time. Love, for the sake of which the problem of choosing between the common universal mind, to which the hero is attached, and the impossibility of returning in the future from the "underdeveloped" planet Earth to the highly developed planet Eir is solved in favor of the former - the planet on which Ur, the son of Sham, found love.
