Zoologist, ethologist and the last living Surrealist artist Desmond Morris combined two sides of his experience - science and art - in this book. As he discusses how various gestures and postures have emerged and acquired meanings throughout history, he takes the reader into the fascinating mysteries of artistic works. The author analyzes why Napoleon posed for ceremonial portraits with his right hand behind the lapel of his uniform, and why the knight on El Greco's canvas presses his palm to his chest with his index finger and little finger out to the side. Many examples from visual culture - from primitive anthropomorphic figures to modern graffiti - make the author look at the history of art in a new way. The book's illustrations are based on numerous examples of ancient Greek vase drawings and sculptures.
