Ernst von Hesse-Warteg was a traveler, diplomat, and author of highly popular books in the second half of the 19th century, influencing the likes of Karl May and Mark Twain. He was also a visionary and adventurer with a mysterious biography. He traveled through Japan several decades after the Meiji Restoration, when the country was undergoing a period of turbulent change. The old collided with the new, the East absorbed Western approaches, but stubbornly strove to remain its own. The author is observant, and although his gaze is always somewhat condescending, he cannot help but admire the art and beauty of Japan. The country he saw and described no longer exists; the entire world has changed, yet many of the achievements of Japanese culture continue to attract many people.
