The novel is based on the true events surrounding the assassination of the Grand Dukes, including Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, in the city of Alapayevsk in the summer of 1918. The novel's main characters are Yefim Solovyov, the Justice Commissioner and one of the organizers of the murder, and Hegumen Seraphim, Princess Elizabeth's confessor, who attempts to save her from death and then transport her body to Jerusalem, hiding for several years from Solovyov's pursuit.

Large-scale historical events intertwine with the characters' destinies. The lives of some turn into mere hagiographies, while those of others become catastrophes. Personal motives ruin the lives of thousands and inspire heroic deeds in thousands more.

The novel covers events from 1918 to 1934, spanning from Manchuria to Solovki. It is a historical detective story in which each character attempts to find their place in a devastated world. This is a story about love for God and hatred, about the apocalypse and salvation.
