Portraying Femininity: Women as Artists in Early Russian Cinema
14.99 €
The heroines of Russian cinematography of 1908-1918 were surprisingly often female representatives of the stage arts. This is primarily due to the historical context of the era: the performing arts represented one of the most important spheres in which women could transcend the social space of the home and find a public profession. In her book, American researcher Rachel Morley addresses the different hypostases of this image - the singer, the dancer, the "tangista," the ballerina, and finally the actress. By reconstructing the cultural landscape of the time, Morley seeks to understand how the representation of creative women in the cinema was linked to the different stages of development of cinema itself. The author examines different approaches to the portrayal of female artists and finds in them a reflection of directors' experiments with the artistic and technical possibilities of film, as well as the search for a new film language. Rachel Morley is a specialist in early Russian and Soviet cinema and teaches Russian cinema and culture at the School of Slavic and East European Studies, University College London (UCL SSEES).
