Ivan Dmitrevsky (1754-1823), author of the book Explanation of the Divine Liturgy, was educated at the Moscow Theological Academy, later served as a translator at the Holy Synod, and from 1800 taught at Moscow University. This work was first published in Moscow in 1804, and then it was repeatedly reprinted. It is a fundamental work on the history of the origin of the Divine Liturgy with a deep and detailed dogmatic explanation of its actions according to the prophecies of the Old Testament; it also reveals the sacramental, mystical significance of the performance of the liturgy.
"Here is shown," writes the author, "the beginning of each part, of each rite and action, the intention and purpose in establishing them, and then the sacramental signs that elevate thoughts to things in the high places, or depict the main and most important events of the life of our Savior in their sequence...". In the appendix he placed "The Book of the Temple and Explanation of the Liturgy" - the work of the outstanding liturgist St. Simeon of Solun, consonant with the theme of his work. The edition is completed by an extensive commentary prepared by Ivan Dmitrevsky himself. The book is addressed to those who wish to perceive the Divine Liturgy more consciously and deeply.
