The novels from the cycle "The Sons of the Big Dipper" by Liselotte Welskopf-Heinrich stand in the same row with adventure books about North American Indians by Fenimore Cooper and Mayne Reid. The works of the German writer have become classics of youth literature, have been reprinted many times, translated into dozens of languages and filmed. The cycle began with the novel of the same name, which was published in 1951, and its author was awarded a prestigious literary prize. In the following years, Welskopf-Heinrich did not stop working on the book and significantly expanded it. The first complete edition was published in three volumes in the early 1960s (later the cycle was also published in six volumes). For her active support of North American Indians, the Oglala tribal union awarded the writer the honorary title of Lakota-Tashina, Protector of the Lakota. The second volume of the trilogy "The Exiles, or Top and Harry" is offered to the attention of readers. The book tells about new trials that befell Mattotaupa, the leader of an Indian tribe of hunters, and Harki, who, following his father, left his native camp and shared the bitter fate of an exile with the leader... The novel is presented in a new full translation by T. Nabatnikova and R. Eyvadis (earlier "The Sons of the Big Dipper" in Russian was published in an abridged form); the book also includes beautiful illustrations by P. Paramonov.
