The second half of the 19th century. Boris, the eldest of Sergei Gorbatov's sons, spent over thirty years "in exile": first in penal servitude, then in exile. He had once participated in the Decembrist uprising and was spotted on Senate Square among the "chief rebels." He was arrested, and during a search, a briefcase containing papers relating to the activities of the "society" was discovered. The briefcase had been given to Boris by his younger brother, but the younger brother refused to confess, while the older brother considered it dishonorable to slander the younger. So, Boris bore the brunt of his punishment, was sent to Siberia, and only now returns, reuniting with his family and meeting the new generation of Gorbatovs who had grown up in his absence. Unfortunately, the family's relationship was anything but serene. This novel is the fourth of five books in the epic "Chronicle of Four Generations," which tells the story of the noble Gorbatov family. Through the story of one family, the author explores various periods of Russian and world history.
