"The first in her entire century in epistolary style," was the high praise Voltaire gave to Marie Rabutin-Chantal, Madame de Sévigné (1626-1696). She lived most of her life in Paris, observing its life, communicating with great contemporaries. With many of them she corresponded, but her main addressee was her favorite daughter, who after her marriage went to Provence. Letters, filled with maternal care, at the same time reflected a vast chronicle of the era - the political, secular and cultural life of France XVII century. Detailed and colorful testimony of Madame de Sévigné later served as a source of stories for great writers, in particular for A. Dumas and Marcel Proust. In addition to its historical value, the epistolary is distinguished by a clear, elegant and expressive syllable, representing a fine example of the art of gallant conversation - "causerie".
Selected letters of Madame de Sévigné are published according to the Russian edition of 1903.
