Kikuchi Kan (1888-1948) was a writer, screenwriter, critic, and publisher. He was born into a poor but generous family. He graduated from Kyoto University and collaborated with the literary magazine Shinshito, where he met and befriended the future classic of Japanese literature Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892-1927) and other young writers. Kikuchi Kan became famous not only as a writer but also as the founder of two of Japan's most prestigious literary prizes, the Akutagawa and Naoki Prizes.
Sharp novel "Portrait of a Lady with Pearls" immediately became a bestseller, it was printed by the largest newspapers in Japan. Works of the writer are characterized by a variety of plots, entertaining and masterful intrigue. His plays, especially "The Return of the Father" (1917), for many years did not come off the stage of Japanese theaters. Many of Kikuchi Kan's works have been made into movies.
