The first book in a new local history series from the second-hand bookstore "Academy".

The authors of this book are lawyer Dmitry Zasosov and railway engineer Vladimir Pyzin, representatives of the St. Petersburg democratic intelligentsia. Gifted with observation and a sense of humor, they tell about its life, the way of life and customs of St. Petersburg residents of various classes in the pre-revolutionary era in a fascinating and loving way. The text is supplemented by extensive comments by art history candidate A. V. Stepanov, which contain interesting information about the history of the city.

The local history of St. Petersburg follows the general trend of recent decades - the researchers' turn to more narrowly focused topics - and is supplemented by works on the smells and sounds of the city, the peculiarities of sanitation and the gastronomic habits of residents.

An important source for this kind of research is the memoirs of contemporaries of events who are able to record their emotions, impressions and experiences. Such are the proposed notes by Dmitry Zasosov and Vladimir Pyzin, which are worth reading as an attempt to convey the subjective perception of life in the city.

Detailed descriptive details of everyday life are connected into a web of meanings and pictures of old Petersburg, which allows us to look at the city of today from a different angle.

This book can be called, without exaggeration, the most important artifact revealing the life of a rapidly growing and changing city at the beginning of the 20th century. We invite you to follow our experience of retrospective navigation in the everyday life of the former capital on the Neva with its help.
