The establishment of Roman rule over Judea in 6 CE led to a series of religious, social, and national conflicts. Pagan Rome's rule over Israel was perceived as an insult to the Jewish religion, leading to political unrest. In 66 CE, the First Jewish War broke out, and Joseph ben Mattityahu led rebel forces in Galilee. After the resistance was crushed, Josephus and forty rebels took refuge in a cave. As Josephus himself recounts, when the rebels decided to kill each other to avoid Roman capture, he cunningly managed to become one of the last two survivors, and then persuaded his comrade to emerge from the cave and surrender to the victor. Emperor Vespasian spared the life of the Jewish commander, who, after the war, managed to secure a position at the emperor's court. He never again visited his homeland. Josephus, the author of his history of the Jewish War, written around 75 CE, has been repeatedly accused of bias, explained by his subordinate position at the Roman court. This does not detract from the intriguing nature of his interpretation of the events of the Jewish War and its significance as an eyewitness account.
