"Italy of Bygone Days" is a diary of one of the most famous writing tandems, the brothers Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, after whom France's most prestigious literary prize is named.
For six months, from November 1855 to May 1856, they traveled from Domodossola to Naples, absorbing the atmosphere of the Italian cities, looking at their architecture, looking, like under a microscope, mosaics, frescoes and paintings in cathedrals and museums, noting the peculiarities of the local inhabitants.
The reader of this book will see not embellished pictures with bright landscapes, but naturalistic sketches, which are formed into a multifaceted collage of details, captured by a keen eye and described in a precise and sometimes caustic syllable.
