This book is a publication of materials from the personal archive of the Holy Martyr John (Pommera) Archbishop of Riga and All Latvia. It is based on the extensive correspondence which in the 1920s and early 1930s Vladyka of Latvia kept with numerous correspondents who were in exile in many countries of the world. Among his correspondents were well-known Russian hierarchs, scientists, and cultural figures. The published letters touch upon various topical issues of concern to the Russian Church emigration at that time. The book also includes correspondence on private matters of persons who have not received wide historical publicity, but who nevertheless give a vivid picture of the plight of Russian refugees in foreign lands. In addition to the publication of the epistolary heritage, the edition also reproduces a number of other archival documents of historical interest. The published material is commented in detail.
The book can be useful both for specialist historians and for a wide range of readers interested in the fate of the Russian dispersion. The documents collected in the book reveal with great completeness the personality of Priest-Martyr John.
