The epic novel by the eminent 18th-century English writer Henry Fielding (1707–1754) follows a classic plot of the time, designed to demonstrate that noble birth is no guarantee of spiritual nobility, and that low birth does not mean one is only capable of baseness. "The History of Tom Jones" tells the story of a young orphan who is raised in an aristocratic family and, despite his dubious origins, displays all the qualities of a true gentleman: selflessness, honesty, and sincerity. As befits such a story, it is precisely these qualities that will help the protagonist find happiness, and all who stood in his way will be justly punished. But it was not this banal plot that made Fielding's work a classic of English literature. "The History of Tom Jones" is a realistic and, at times, humorous portrait of English life and customs of the time.
