The fifth book of the History of the Reign of Philip II describes the war with the Moriscos from 1566 to 1571, and the war with the Turks from 1570 to 1574. The successes of the Christian coalition in the war against the Ottoman Empire, the victory at the Battle of Lepanto dealt a strong blow to the power of the Turks and influenced the entire future history of Europe, as well as Russia.
In the unfinished sixth book the author deals with the internal affairs of Spain under Philip, his relations with prominent representatives of the Castilian nobility, the Cortes and the clergy, and the thirty-year construction of the Escorial as one of the most important architectural projects of the 16th century.
