The famous satirical novel-chronicle "The History of a Town" by M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin in this edition is illustrated with portraits of the Foolov mayors, made by Nikolai Remizov, Alexander Yunger, Alexei Radakov and Alexander Yakovlev; these brilliant drawings were first published in 1907 as a separate album. The edition also includes nineteen fairy tales by Saltykov-Shchedrin, including such famous ones as "The Wise Minnow" and "The Idealist Crucian Carp". The drawings for the tales were made by Evgeny Zhak and Boris Pokrovsky.

The History of a Town was first published as a separate book in 1870. Saltykov-Shchedrin’s contemporaries perceived this work, incredibly powerful in its satirical power, somewhat differently than readers today, since it contained references not only to biblical stories or to the period of palace coups, but also allusions to life in Russia in the second half of the 19th century, many details of which are now hidden in the fog of time.
