"The History of a Town" is one of the most famous works by M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889). The picture of Russian life is presented here in the history of the fictional town of Foolov. Turning to fantasy and the grotesque, Saltykov-Shchedrin created a whole gallery of successive Foolov mayors. Behind these funny and sometimes scary images, the rulers of the Russian state and its true history are easily discernible. "His laughter is bitter and harsh, his mockery often offends," Turgenev wrote about Saltykov-Shchedrin. "This is a natural manifestation of his character, in which inner kindness and sensitivity are hidden under external severity." The first publication of the novel (1869-1870) caused heated controversy in the press. Responding to the critics' reproaches, Saltykov-Shchedrin wrote: "Perhaps I am wrong, but in that case reality is a hundred times more wrong than me..."
