Binduccio dello Scelto, a Florentine contemporary of Dante, translated Benoît de Sainte-Maure's famous "Romance of Troy" (c. 1165) into Italian in the late 13th or early 14th centuries. He used not the original verse text, but a French prose adaptation of the novel. Binduccio's lengthy book, in which the ancient Greek heroes of the Iliad fight before the walls of Troy as noble barons and glorious knights, reflects the changes that occurred in the Middle Ages with late antique versions of the Trojan legend, which had now become the property of vernacular literature.
