The novelist and poet Ihara Saikaku, nicknamed the "master of twenty thousand lines" for his talent for improvisation, pioneered an entire movement in Japanese prose—ukiyo-zoshi, tales of the mortal world. But he is primarily known for his works in the koshoku-mono genre, love stories, the most famous of which is considered to be "The Story of a Lonely Woman's Love Adventures."

Here is a heartfelt and poignant confession of an old hermit living alone in a tidy hut high in the mountains. Upon meeting two young men, the old woman tells them the story of her life, which was full of passions and pleasures.

This edition also includes the collection "Five Women Who Surrendered to Love"—five stories about women who, following their hearts, disregarded the laws of family life and moral norms.
