Most of us will have no trouble saying what a bastion or a dugout is. But are we familiar with the words anvelope, valgang, escarpment, caponier, reduit? This book tells about what these terms mean and how defensive structures and methods of attack have been improved over the centuries, starting from ancient times.

It was written by a major Russian military engineer, professor at several academies, who even lectured to the future Emperor Nicholas II, and is a classic work in its field. As examples, it examines the structure of such fortifications as the Munot rondel, the fortresses of Germersheim, Ulm, Dunkirk, the defensive complexes of Koblenz, Antwerp, Paris, the Pskov, Smolensk and Moscow Kremlins, the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg, the forts of the Gulf of Finland and many others.

The book is published with carefully selected illustrations - photographs, works of fine art, drawings and plans.

At the end of the book there is a dictionary of fortification terms.
