Academician Yevgeny Tarle's History of Italy in the Middle Ages is a brilliant study that, in a compact space, succinctly and accessibly recounts a crucial period in Italian history, beginning with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and ending with the advent of the Renaissance.

Between these two periods, we witness successive barbarian invasions, the succession of Byzantine, Spanish, and French rule in Italy, Arab and Norman raids, the rise of the Roman pontiffs and their confrontation with the Holy Roman Emperors, the flourishing of the Lombard merchant republics, the rise of Venice, the unique destiny of Southern Italy, the emergence of universities—and, finally, the awakening of classical culture after a thousand years of slumber.

Yevgeny Tarle's book was first published in 1906 and has not been reprinted since. Evgeny Tarle (1874–1955) was an outstanding historian, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences, corresponding member of the British Academy, and honorary doctor of the Paris, Prague, and several other universities.
