History of the Spanish Inquisition

In 1478, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile created an organization that went down in history as the Spanish Inquisition. The principal difference between the Spanish Inquisition and the Catholic Church institutions of the same name that operated throughout Europe was that it put the interests of the royal power above all else and sometimes clashed with the popes for their sake. The Spanish Inquisitors paid little attention to the persecution of witches, but they were not afraid to engage in political investigation and severely punished all those who interfered with the achievement of state and religious unity of Spain - especially Muslims, Jews and Lutherans. Thousands and thousands of people were forcibly converted by them to Christianity, and then punished for not being zealous enough Christians. In his famous work Samuel Lozinsky describes in detail the existence of the Spanish Inquisition - from its formation to its abolition in the first quarter of the XIX century. The book, which was published in 1914, is published for the first time in modern Russian orthography.
