"History of Art as History of Spirit" is a collection of articles by Max Dvořák (1874-1921), an Austrian art historian, professor at the University of Vienna, and one of the founders of modern philosophy and theory of art. Compiled by his students after his death, the book opened the five-volume collection of the outstanding scholar's works, becoming the most complete reflection of his latest methodology. Dvořák's description of the evolution of European art begins with late antiquity and deliberately chooses turning points - early Christian painting of catacombs, late Gothic, Mannerism, focusing attention on the conflict of the creative spirit's quest, its eternal and intense dialog with the givenness of the visible world.
