"History of the Civil Wars in France" by Enrico Caterino Davila is the work of an Italian military and political figure who as a young man served at the court of the Valois kings of France and witnessed and then participated in the large-scale conflict between Catholics and Protestants, commonly referred to as the Wars of Religion (1559-1598). In 1630, shortly before his death, Davila wrote a history of these wars, which immediately became widely known and was translated into several European languages. Before the reader is a great historical work, in fact, the history of France in the second half of the sixteenth century, the history of a brutal civil military-political and social struggle. For the first time, a foreign author presented the forty-year French conflict both as a participant in it and as an outside observer and analyst. Davila showed that the religious side of the war often faded into the background amid the struggle of the parties for material interests, social status, and privileges, giving way to the open clash of great family clans and the settling of personal scores. Enrico Caterino tried to show his readers that, despite their mistakes and inconsistencies, the kings of the Valois family tried to keep the peace, trying to reconcile the warring religious and political sides. He recounts the difficult circumstances in which momentous decisions were made, including the Night of Bartholomew on August 24, 1572. Davila's portraits of the era's figures are believable and appealing. Under his pen, Henry III, Catherine de Medici, Duke Henry de Guise, and Admiral de Coligny seem neither villains nor victims - they are political adversaries worthy of each other, each pursuing his own goals.
