"Karamzin is our first historian and our last chronicler..." - wrote A. S. Pushkin about his great contemporary Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin (1766-1826). The famous historian, writer and educator, N. M. Karamzin addressed his 12-volume work - "History of the Russian State" - to all Russians, contemporaries and descendants. This book became the most important event in the life of society, an era in the study of the country's past. This fundamental work changed the face of Russian culture. Largely due to the merits of N. M. Karamzin, Russian culture in all its genres entered its brilliant 19th century as a great world culture. The illustrated edition of "History of the Russian State" offered to the reader is timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of N. M. Karamzin. For the first time, the publishing house presents to the modern Russian reader a complete cycle of drawings from the album “History of the Russian State in Images of Its Sovereign Rulers” by Professor of Historical Painting at the Imperial Academy of Arts V. P. Vereshchagin and a complete cycle of rare lithographs by B. A. Chorikov from the series “Picturesque Karamzin”. The publication is supplied with extensive modern commentary and notes that explain little-known realities, and also provide biographical data on the historical figures mentioned by Karamzin. The appendix contains “Notes on Ancient and New Russia in Its Political and Civil Relations”, which was not included in the main collection. The publication is supplied with a detailed index.
