The course of lectures by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy Alexey Borisovich Egorov is his second book from the series "History of the Ancient World", which sets out the main events of ancient history. It is dedicated to the political and cultural history of Ancient Rome of the Tsarist period and the era of the Republic (753-31 BC) - from the foundation of Rome to the end of the civil wars and the beginning of the principate of Octavian Augustus. This was the time when a small community on the Tiber gradually turned into a powerful superpower, subjugating vast territories and becoming the heir to the civilizations of the Near East, Greece and the Hellenistic states. The book consistently examines the stages of the evolution of the Roman state: the era of the Roman kings (8th-6th centuries BC), the time of the formation of the Roman Republic and the conquest of Italy (5th-3rd centuries BC), the period of great conquests and the transformation of Rome into the hegemon of the Mediterranean (265-133 BC), and probably the most dramatic era in Roman history - the civil wars (133-31 BC), which ended with the creation of the empire of Julius Caesar and Octavian Augustus, who saved the state from collapse and death. In addition to the socio-political and economic problems of Roman history, the book examines Roman culture, science and art and emphasizes their original and creative character.

Recommended for teachers and students of theological educational institutions, theological faculties of secular universities, as well as a wide range of readers interested in the history of Ancient Rome.
