The "History of the Future" occupies a special place in R. E. Heinlein's oeuvre. Begun in the late 1930s with the short story "Life Line" and subsequently continued with such classics as "The Man Who Sold the Moon," "Green Hills of Earth," and other equally important works, it covers the vast time span of the space age, as Heinlein envisioned it. In his "History of the Future," heroic periods alternate with dictatorships, the world turns to war, only to return to peace—many events unfold along man's journey into the future. The only constant is man—searching, struggling, conquering, doubting, loving, and humane. "Stepchildren of the Universe," Heinlein's celebrated novel, also part of his "History of the Future," is not included in this edition, as it was published earlier in the "World of Fantasy" series, in a volume of the same name.
