"Rembrandt's Country Stories" is the story of the formation of the Republic of the United Provinces, told through the lives of the people depicted by the great Dutch painter. The author fascinatingly tells of political and religious struggles, of disputes over the question of predestination, of trade with the enemy, of the marriages of the sons of the Staatgalters with English princesses and the Anglo-Dutch Wars. The reader will also learn about various aspects of everyday life: what the Dutch were sick and how they were treated, who and what they studied at the university, how the procedure of election to the city council took place, where Dutch tourists traveled and what they were interested in. He will also get acquainted with Rembrandt's portraits, which are kept in Western collections and therefore less known than the artist's paintings in Russian museums.
