The Real Life of Sebastian Knight is Vladimir Nabokov's first English-language novel, completed in 1939 in Paris and published in the United States two years later. Its labyrinthine structure and quasi-detective plot predetermined the distinctiveness of Nabokov's subsequent fiction—Lolita, Pale Fire, Ada, and especially his last completed book, Look at the Harlequins! The narrator, identified only by the initials V., reconstructs the life story of his half-brother, the late writer Sebastian Knight, using memoirs, oral histories, and excerpts from Knight's books. Eluding V.'s persistent search, Knight's true life proves directly connected to the mystery of his name, his writings, the laws of literary art, and Nabokov's metaphysics. This edition of the novel includes a preface, notes, and a concluding essay by the translator. The translator's spelling, punctuation, and transliteration have been preserved.
