Art, religion, commerce, the birth of the art market. The Northern Renaissance
69.99 €
The author of this book, Stephanie Porras, an art historian, associate professor at Tulane University in New Orleans, and expert on Northern Renaissance culture, describes how the status and role of art changed between 1400 and 1570 in the Netherlands, Germany, France, and England, and how artists and patrons participated in this process, responding to rapid political, social, economic, and religious changes. Art was transformed from craft to high matter, and artists from artisans to creators.
Porras speaks not only of such luminaries as Jan van Eyck or Albrecht Dürer, but also of lesser-known masters, fundamentally not limiting himself to painting alone. Sculpture, architecture, engravings, jewelry, tapestries occupy the main place in her narrative. The author is particularly fascinating in describing the emergence of the urban merchant class and the emergence of a new type of art consumer in the booming art market at the same time as the traditional influence of monarchs and aristocratic families as the main customers of artistic works.
