In the art of recent decades, installation has come to signify a leading art form. However, as Claire Bishop notes, "the wide range of variations in the appearance, content, and scale of works created under this name today, as well as the freedom in the use of the term, make it almost devoid of any definitive meaning". The task of the present book is to organize this seemingly vast and heterogeneous material. Drawing on the analysis of specific works, the author shows that, since the perception of such art requires the physical presence of the public within the work, it can be categorized according to the type of experience it offers the viewer. Bishop traces the origins of installation art in the artistic avant-garde of the 1920s, pays close attention to the neo-avant-garde of the 1960s and 1970s, and examines late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century art practices while clarifying the conceptual foundations of installation art.
