It's the hot summer of 1950. A children's library on Kirov Street. An elderly veteran is found murdered in the reading room. None of his personal belongings are missing. Only one thing is missing: Goethe's books, bound in expensively.
Investigator Arkady Nikitin realizes it's not a robbery. Why would the killer need a collection of German poetry? To burn it in a stove? To sell it to thieves? Or was there something in the book that
no one was supposed to see.
Meanwhile, police officer Sidorenkov stumbles upon an oil-stained bag in a trash bin. Inside are seven PPSh submachine guns and an old Polish rifle. Nikitin doesn't yet know that within 24 hours, Sidorenkov will be murdered on the landing—quickly, brutally, with a chalk inscription on the wall: "He took what belonged to him."
But who is the boss of this group? The mysterious "Engineer" who deals in weapons? A mechanic from Mosgaz? Or a colleague from a neighboring department, who learned of Sidorenkov's discovery before the body had even cooled.
Colonel Pinchuk urges Nikitin to quickly close the case and stop digging. But the stubborn investigator digs. And finds what they tried to hide forever. So the game isn't over. One of his colleagues has two faces—that of a police officer and that of a merchant of death. And the main question now isn't "Who's the killer?" but... is it possible to survive when a traitor knows all your moves?
