Italian-British philosopher Federico Campagna's (b. 1984) history of the Mediterranean is written as a "practical survival guide" under the onslaught of global forces. The author focuses on the crises faced by the region's inhabitants at various times: the conquests of Alexander the Great, which dramatically expanded the borders of the ancient world; the fall of the Roman Empire; the clash between Christian and Islamic cultures in the Middle Ages; and the horrors of two world wars. The book's protagonists lived through turning points in history and coped with radical changes to their familiar reality through radical survival strategies. Drawing on historical, philosophical, and mythological texts that Mediterranean peoples created during periods of great upheaval, and analyzing the most resilient structures of "long-term time" that persist amidst a series of cataclysms and disasters, Campagna seeks imaginary "other" worlds where people have found and continue to find refuge in difficult times.
