The book by E.G. Kostrikova is devoted to an important and still little-studied issue in the history of World War I — Russia's participation in the confrontation with the enemy in the information field. The first part of the book examines the activities of government agencies responsible for the information security of the Russian Empire, primarily the Petrograd Telegraph Agency (PTA) — the main information resource of the tsarist government. For the press, the PTA was the main source of reports on events at the front and in the rear. In close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agency launched active work in neutral countries, counteracting enemy agitation and disseminating positive information about Russia.
The second part of the book covers the information policy of the Provisional Government. The February Revolution significantly influenced the principles of activity of the institutions responsible for the information sphere. Their employees, who replaced the old staff, learned to constructively interact with the press and public organizations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Petrograd Telegraph Agency were tasked with helping to form a positive image of the new Russia abroad.
The monograph is based on a comprehensive study of sources, primarily archival materials, most of which are being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time.
